Bodegas Muriel's Reserva is produced with grapes from 35 year old vines, growing on poor loamy, - clay calcareous soils in Elciego on the north bank of the Ebro in Rioja Alavesa. Grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 15 - 20 days, with daily pumping over to aid extraction. The wine is aged for 24 months in 225L French and American Oak barrels, then for a further 2 years in bottle before release.
Bodegas Muriel is now one of Spain's largest wine groups, but this Muriel wine was the foundation upon which the group has been established. Bodegas Muriel was established in 1926 by José Murúa. His son, Julián Murúa, took over in 1986 and has steered the group to its current situation. The group comprises of 6 wineries, 4 in Rioja, 1 in Rias Baixas and the other focusing on traditional varietal country wines.
