Cà dei Frati's vineyards are located on the southern shores of Lake Garda, close to the town of Sirmione. The vines are around 50 years old, growing in clay soils and trained in a low dense style. This reduces the yields, but results in grapes with intense fruit flavours.
Grapes are hand picked and sorted before pneumatic pressing. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The two stage aging process is initially on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks for 6 months followed by 6 months in used oak barriques. The wine is aged for a further 2 months in bottle before release.
Cà dei Frati dates back to 1782 with a reference in a document to a cellar at the House of the Friars. In 1939 winemaker Felice Dal Cero moved to the house and began planting vines and establishing the winery. In 1969 Felice's son Pietro was one of the winemakers behind the establishment of the DoC Lugana. Today the business is managed by Pietro's children, Igino, Gian Franco and Anna Maria. They have over 200 hectares of prime vineyards and have become one of Lugana's best wine producers.
