José Maria da Fonseca has been making wines since 1834, and is the oldest producer of table wines in Portugal. Today with almost 650 hectares of vineyards and a winery equipped with the latest technology, their wines combine the experience of their long history with the most advanced winemaking techniques.
Under the guidance of Domingos Soares Franco, the first Portuguese winemaker to graduate from the University of Davis in California, the winemaking team undertake a wide range of research, studies and innovation to make José Maria da Fonseca a pioneer in much of what is done in terms of enology in Portugal and in the world.
The purchase of Casa Agricola José de Sousa Rosado Fernandes in 1986 allowed José Maria da Fonseca to fulfill a long held dream to produce Alentejo wines using traditional methods.
