Bobal is a traditional Spanish grape. The name comes from bovale, spanish for bull, as the bunches are said to resemble the shape of a bull's head. It was historically often used in mediocre blends. Over recent years a number of producers have started making wines that demonstrate the qualities of this grape variety. This variety is well suited to the La Mancha region, as it retains acidity despite the high ambient temperatures.
Juan Antonio Ponce is a leading authority in Spain on biodynamic and natural winemaking.
Clos Lojen is made with grapes selected from 6 parcels at an altitude of 800 - 1,000m. The bush vines are 30 - 50 years old and predominantly growing on chalky clay soils.
Whole bunches of grapes are chilled and then squeezed by foot before fermenting in wooden vats. The wine is matured in used French oak barrels before bottling without filtration.
